Dr. Athina Gianopoulou was born in Xanthi and grew up in Thessaloniki. She graduated with honors from the Medical School of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 1986. She immediately started her internship in General Surgery at the Theagenio Anti-Cancer Hospital of Thessaloniki. Three years later and after completing her mandatory year of service (rural) in a remote area of Greece, she went to the United States to pursue a career in medicine, a dream she had since she started her studies in medical school.

She was admitted in 1990 to the Department of General Surgery at Duke University, under the chairmanship of Dr. Sabiston and worked as a researcher in the melanoma surgery laboratories. She successfully passed the ECFMG and FLEX exams and was accepted to the General Surgery program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the oldest public university in the United States. In 1996, she continued her residency in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at UNC with combined training in microsurgery at Duke University and trauma and craniofacial surgery at CMC, Charlotte NC.

After obtaining the American Board of Plastic Surgery specialty certification, he began surgical collaborations in Aesthetic Blepharoplasty and Breast Surgery at Paces Plastic Surgery Center at Emory University in Atlanta. She has had the good fortune to work with and be taught by some of the greatest and most competent internationally recognized plastic surgeons, including Dr. Rod Hester, Dr. Foad Nahai, Dr. Mc Cord and Dr. Codner.

She returned to Durham NC and started her own practice in cosmetic plastic surgery. For 9 years she worked in Durham NC having a talented career, recognized as one of the most successful plastic surgeons in the area.

She returned to Greece in 2009 and started her own Plastic Surgery Center in Thessaloniki. Dr. Athina Gianopoulou expresses her attitude and philosophy regarding aesthetic plastic surgery. She receives patients from Greece and abroad on a daily basis, performing surgeries at the Agios Loukas Clinic in Panorama, Thessaloniki.

She is the Founder and President of AELIA, an organization that fights breast cancer and is the coordinator of Women Act Thessaloniki, which supports and promotes women’s entrepreneurship.

She is a mother of two, loves travelling and yoga.
