Fat and its application is the new tool of plastic surgeons with which they can correct multiple problems. Fat transfer is a relatively easy procedure that can be performed on an outpatient basis with local anaesthetic or sedation.
During surgery, the plastic surgeon uses blunt cannulas to aspirate fat from different areas of the body, areas where fat is excess. Fat is then washed, centrifuged and undergone specific procedures in order to get prepared for reapplication to different breast areas with the use of small specific cannulas.
Fat is used nowadays to correct breast volume and shape deficits. These may have been always present or may have developed post surgery. Fat transfer can correct volume deficits after a wide local excision, can recreate a normal axilla after a lymph node dissection, can fatten the breast skin post radiation and can reconstruct breast asymmetries or tubular breast anomalies restoring the natural breast shape. A second or third fat transfer session may be required in some period of time, to add the volume lost, after fat absorption.
