Eyelid ptosis or abnormal drooping of the eyelid is a common condition frequently encountered during aesthetic and reconstructive eyelid surgery. The drooping eyelid margin is in a position lower than normal or lower than the other eyelid. The eyelid ptosis can be congenital or acquired later in life.
It is extremely important for the surgeon to recognize the condition before any eyelid surgery even the administration of Botox. Clinical evaluation is of outmost importance because ptosis can be corrected surgically.
There are a lot of conditions that lead to ptosis of the eyelid. Sometimes we need a comprehensive approach with the assistance of ophthalmologist and neurologist.
The repair is through the same incision as in blepharoplasty, can be repair by itself or in combination with cosmetic blepharoplasty. The recovery is simple and the same as traditional eyelid surgery. Sometimes needs to be done only with local anaesthesia so the plastic surgeon can estimate the correct level of correction.
