Treatment of wounds from other surgical specialties

Plastic surgeons cooperate nowadays with all surgical specialties for the appropriate closure of surgical wounds. There are many patients that choose a plastic surgeon to suture a wound when another specialty’s procedure is completed.

For example a plastic surgeon may take over from a general surgeon to suture a wound in the abdomen, the neck or the breast, from an orthopaedic surgeon in upper or lower limbs, from a gynaecologist in the lower abdominal area, from a cardiothoracic surgeon in the chest wall area and from a urologist in the lateral abdominal wall or back.

It is quite common for the plastic surgeon to plan the initial incision cut, taking under consideration the needs of the other surgical specialty, in such a manner that the final wound is placed in less visible areas postoperatively, without interfering with the final outcome of the procedure.
